Are You a Candidate for Implant Dentures? GTA Eligibility Guide

Smiling senior couple — candidates for implant-retained dentures in Toronto

If you've been fighting a loose lower denture for years, you've probably wondered whether implant-retained dentures could finally fix it. The honest answer for most people is yes — but eligibility comes down to a few specific factors. Here's what actually determines whether you're a candidate.

1. Do you have enough jawbone?

Implants anchor into your jawbone, so bone volume and density matter most. Years of wearing a traditional denture — or going without teeth — cause the bone to shrink (resorb). The good news: even patients with significant bone loss are often still candidates, sometimes with a small bone graft first. The only way to know for certain is a CBCT scan (a 3D cone-beam X-ray), which your oral surgeon takes before any surgery.

2. Are your gums and remaining teeth healthy?

Active gum disease or infection needs to be treated before implants go in. If you still have some natural teeth that are failing, they may be removed as part of the plan — and an immediate denture keeps you smiling while everything heals.

3. Is your general health stable?

Implant surgery is minor and done under local anesthetic, but well-controlled health matters. Conditions like diabetes, or habits like heavy smoking, can slow healing — they rarely rule you out, but your surgeon will factor them in. Certain medications (like some for osteoporosis) are worth mentioning at your consult.

4. How many implants will you need?

  • Lower arch: typically 3 implants for a stable snap-on overdenture.
  • Upper arch: usually 4, because the upper jawbone is softer.

Already have implants placed elsewhere? That's one of our most common cases — we can build a new overdenture to clip onto them, often in just 2–4 weeks.
