Are You a Candidate for Implant Dentures? GTA Eligibility Guide
Wondering if you qualify for secure, snap-on teeth? Discover the key jawbone, medical, and lifestyle factors that determine implant overdenture eligibility.
Who is the ideal candidate for implant-retained dentures?
The ideal implant dentures gta candidate is someone who currently wears complete upper or lower dentures (or is facing full-arch tooth extraction) and is looking for a stable solution to loose, slipping teeth. Key requirements include having adequate jawbone density to support dental implants, being in good general health for a minor surgical procedure, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene.
The Four Pillars of Implant Denture Eligibility
Before proceeding with implant-supported overdentures, Damien Hiorth DD and our trusted network of oral surgeons evaluate patients in the Greater Toronto Area against four essential pillars of candidacy.
Jawbone Density and Volume
Implants require a strong, solid jawbone foundation to fuse properly (a process called osseointegration). Over years of wearing traditional dentures, your jawbone naturally shrinks (resorbs) due to a lack of root stimulation. If a 3D Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan reveals significant bone loss, bone grafting or a sinus lift may be recommended by our referred surgeon to rebuild the ridge before implant placement.
General Physical Health
Because placing dental implants is a surgical procedure, candidates must be healthy enough for minor outpatient surgery. Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, severe bleeding disorders, or active cancer treatments can impair the body's natural healing response. If you have chronic conditions, we coordinate directly with your family doctor to ensure the procedure is safe for you.
Gum & Tissue Health
Candidates must be free of active periodontal (gum) disease. Healthy, firm gum tissue is vital for forming a secure protective barrier around the implant attachments. Any active gum infections or inflammation must be fully treated and resolved before implants can be surgically placed.
Lifestyle & Habits
Smoking or vaping reduces blood flow to the oral tissues, significantly slowing down healing and increasing the rate of implant failure. While smoking doesn't automatically disqualify you, it does require a high level of caution and commitment to cessation during the healing period. Additionally, candidates must be committed to regular maintenance and cleaning of their snap attachments.
Damien's Standard Configurations for Maximum Stability
At Dentures Direct, we do not believe in taking shortcuts with your smile. Damien John Hiorth DD follows a rigorous, clinically-proven protocol to ensure your overdentures never shift or click:
- Lower Jaw (3 Implants): While some clinics place only 2 implants on the lower jaw, Damien's standard protocol is to recommend 3 implants. This configuration distributes chewing forces much more evenly and prevents the denture from rocking or pivoting from side to side.
- Upper Jaw (4 Implants): The bone in the upper jaw is naturally softer and less dense than the lower jaw. To ensure a secure, long-term fit, Damien recommends a minimum of 4 implants for the upper arch.

The On-Site Lab Advantage in North York
Many denture clinics outsource their overdenture fabrication to external dental labs, which leads to delays, communication errors, and higher markups.
At Dentures Direct, our fully equipped in-house dental laboratory in North York allows Damien Hiorth DD and our RDT candidate, Luisa, to design, mill, and customize your overdenture entirely on-site. This direct, hands-on control ensures that the snap attachments align perfectly with the implants placed by the oral surgeon, giving you maximum comfort and stability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, in many cases you can. If you have experienced bone resorption (jawbone shrinkage) due to long-term tooth loss or loose traditional dentures, bone grafting or a sinus lift can rebuild the jawbone foundation. An oral surgeon will assess your bone volume using a 3D CBCT scan to determine if grafting is necessary before placing the implants.
Age itself is rarely a limiting factor. Candidates in their 80s and 90s have successfully received implant-supported dentures. What matters most is your general physical health, ability to undergo minor surgical placement, and jawbone quality, rather than chronological age.
While smoking does not automatically disqualify you, it significantly reduces blood flow to the gums and jawbone, which slows down healing and increases the risk of implant failure. We strongly advise patients to quit or significantly cut down on smoking in the weeks before and after the implant surgery.
